OpenSFS Announces Availability of Lustre 2.5

Open Scalable File Systems (OpenSFS) is pleased to announce the availability of the Lustre 2.5 software release. In recent years the Lustre 2.x release series has delivered major new features and enhancements, enabling success of the Lustre file system not only in demanding HPC environments, but also the challenging world of Big Data and Enterprise computing.

With the release of Lustre 2.5, yet another major milestone has been reached -- delivering the highly anticipated Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) functionality, often a core requirement in enterprise environments. With HSM, customers can now easily implement tiered storage solutions in their operational environments.

Galen Shipman, Chairman of OpenSFS, states, "Lustre 2.5 is an important release for enterprise users. HSM allows organizations to define policies to optimize the cost-effectiveness of their storage usage. This is extremely useful for heterogeneous enterprise storage environments." Shipman also noted, "HSM provides a major incentive for long-time users of the Lustre 1.x branch to upgrade. Lustre 2.5 is a major step forward for the Lustre file system."

Much of the primary Lustre HSM development is credited to the talent and effort of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (Le Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives, or CEA). OpenSFS provided a test cluster to validate functionality and coordinated test activities including community vetting and testing of the entire Lustre 2.5 release.
