Fujitsu Launches New PRIMEQUEST Series

Fujitsu today announced the immediate availability of its new mission-critical x86 FUJITSU Server PRIMEQUEST 2000 series, comprised of five models, featuring the latest Intel Xeon Processor E7 v2 family.

Retaining the reliability, availability, and superior price performance of the company’s previous x86 series, the PRIMEQUEST 2000 series offers a highly reliable multi-OS platform that is able to run Microsoft Windows Server and Linux, as well as Fujitsu’s own FUJITSU Software OSIV/XSP mainframe OS and FUJITSU Software ASP office computer OS.

Moreover, with scalability up to 120 cores and up to 12 TB of memory, it delivers up to 2.5 times the performance of the previous series. The PRIMEQUEST 2800E enterprise model, in particular, has achieved the world’s top performance levels on three major industry benchmarks.

In addition to retaining the high reliability and high availability of the previous series, the new series, which combines high performance and extra-large memory capacity to deliver superior price performance, also excels in virtual consolidation of mission-critical systems, for which high reliability is a must, and in-memory computing functions, helping contribute to customer business.

In recent years, to quickly keep pace with changes in the business environment, more customers are thinking of deploying private clouds to help them optimize their existing systems and flexibly employ their computing resources. At the same time, for their mission-critical systems that need to be highly reliable, there is an increasing need to lower total cost of ownership by using industry-standard technology as well as to employ massive amounts of mission-critical data in their business strategies.

To meet these needs for a highly reliable platform, since 2005 Fujitsu has offered its PRIMEQUEST open-standard, mission-critical servers, which combine industry-standard open architecture with the high-reliability, high-availability technology Fujitsu cultivated from its mainframe business.

The new PRIMEQUEST 2000 series offers further advancements in high-reliability, high-availability technology and, through such features as new processors, large-scale memory capacity, and abundant computing resources, delivers greatly improved performance. With its highly reliable platform that enables mission-critical systems to be optimized, and with its combination of high performance and extra-large memory capacity that enables the analysis of enormous amounts of mission-critical data, it provides significant support to customers in optimizing both their ICT environments and their businesses.

The PRIMEQUEST 2000 series is comprised of five models in the following three categories.

Features of the PRIMEQUEST 2000 Series

1. Mainframe-class reliability and availability for superior business continuity

This series delivers the same mainframe-class reliability and availability of the previous series through its high-reliability design that offers thorough redundancy of all major hardware components, and high-availability features, such as its built-in auxiliary system board that enables autonomous system restart in the unlikely event of a failure. Moreover, because it has multiple memory domains for firmware, it provides an online firmware update feature that enables firmware updates to be loaded while the system is running, thereby minimizing business disruptions.

2. The latest processors and a large memory capacity help accelerate customer business

The latest Intel Xeon Processor E7 v2 family, with operating speed of 2.8 GHz and 37.5 MB of level 3 cache, can be configured in up to 8 CPUs (120 cores) or 4 CPUs (60 cores) on one partition, while the maximum memory capacity has been expanded from 2 TB on the previous series to 12 TB, offering up to 2.5 times greater performance compared to previous models. Additionally, in the PRIMEQUEST 2800E enterprise model, this scalability has achieved the world’s highest performance for an 8-CPU server on three industry benchmarks: SPECint_rate2006, SPECfp_rate2006, and VMware VMmark V2. By using business intelligence tools and taking advantage of such features as high-speed in memory processing of large-scale transactions, this high scalability helps accelerate business for customers.

3. High flexibility and multi-OS compliance optimizes customer ICT investment

The new series retains the partitioning features of the previous series so that hardware resources in a PRIMEQUEST server can be partitioned into multiple independent systems, each running different operating systems. It can run the industry-standard operation systems Microsoft Windows Server and Linux, as well as Fujitsu’s own FUJITSU Software OSIV/XSP mainframe OS and FUJITSU Software ASP office computer OS, all at the same time. Through the combined use of hardware partitioning functions that have an exceptional ability to isolate errors, and virtualization software, customers are able to efficiently consolidate a group of servers comprised of multiple architectures running tasks of varying scales and with differing needs for reliability, thereby helping them to optimize their ICT investment. Moreover, this is the first x86 server to offer Dynamic Reconfiguration, enabling customers to flexibly expand or reduce such resources as CPUs, memory, and PCI cards in accordance with their work loads.
