Convey Computer Joins OpenPOWER Foundation
Convey Computer today announced the company has joined the OpenPOWER Foundation, an open development community based on the POWER microprocessor architecture.
Convey joins a growing roster of technology organizations working collaboratively to build advanced server, networking, storage and acceleration technology as well as industry leading open source software aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers. The group makes POWER hardware and software available to open development for the first time, as well as making POWER intellectual property licensable to others, greatly expanding the ecosystem of innovators on the platform.

Convey delivers accelerated hybrid-core solutions to customers who need powerful platforms to reduce time-to-solution, lower operating costs, and shrink data center footprints. The company plans to use their HC technology and reconfigurable computing expertise in conjunction with IBM's Power8 servers to accelerate applications in data analytics.
Data analytics applications, such as image resizing and image recognition, are well-suited for acceleration because of the large amount of decoding/encoding, resizing, and pattern matching they require. When mapped onto a reconfigurable accelerator, like Convey's hybrid-core technology, these types of applications typically achieve thirty-five fold performance increases. Better performance not only speeds results, it saves money by reducing the overall amount of servers needed along with corresponding amounts of power, cooling, and data center space.
