Predixion, Wind River Partner for IoT Analytics in Cloud

During the Intel Developer Forum on Tuesday, Predixion Software and Wind River unveiled a partnership designed to empower enterprises to leverage the petabytes of data created by the Internet of Things (IoT).

By 2020, the amount of data in the world will reach 440 zettabytes, up from about 4.4ZB today, according to the 2014 "Digital Universe of Opportunities" report by IDC (and sponsored by EMC). IoT will represent about one-tenth of that data, IDC determined, and the quantity of data that will spend its entire life in the cloud will double.

Transforming that data into usable information will only become more challenging for organizations as the number of sensors, wearables, connected machines, and other IoT devices expands, and the existing collections of data grows. Predixion, a developer of cloud-based advanced analytics software, and Wind River, which created Helix Device Cloud, a cloud-based IoT platform that allows IoT devices to securely connect to network infrastructure, believe the partnership allows both business users and data analysts to simply and securely analyze data from numerous sources and points in time to predict, then act, across multiple environments.

"Traditional analytics tools cannot handle the volume or speed of IoT data at the edge and many devices and machines are in remote areas with limited or periodic connectivity. This has led to the evolution of IoT architectures that use aggregation or filtering techniques that create time lags and data blind spots for current cloud-based solutions," Steve Stover, vice president of marketing and product management at Predixion, told EnterpriseTech. "The Predictive Maintenance solution by Predixion and Wind River provides the capability to take action at the IoT edge, based on predictive insights, such as emergency orderly shut-downs or production changes. The solution is designed specifically for the IoT to address these complex scenarios. Wind River and Predixion customers will gain further leverage from the integrated solution by automating the deployment of Predixion’s MLSM packages to devices managed by the Wind River Helix Device Cloud."

Features of the combined solution include:

  • Rapid deployment: Organizations can develop, then deploy advanced analytics on-device, on-gateway, or in the cloud, and use ongoing management for IoT architectures;
  • Real-time actions: Advanced analytics at the IoT edge support both connected and disconnected environments;
  • Multiple application options: Using Predixion analytics, Wind River Device Cloud allows organizations to conduct predictive maintenance and predictive operations management.

Security is also key, said Keith Shea, vice president of alliances and business development at Wind River.

"The Predixion team worked directly with Wind River to integrate their technology on the edge, keeping intact all the device-side security features. On the cloud-side, the Predixion configuration tools have a configured authentication mechanism to protect the application," Shea told EnterpriseTech. "The Predixion development team leveraged the Helix Device Cloud extensibility tools to integrate the Predixion configuration tools directly into the Device Cloud UI, eliminating the need to authenticate and interact with multiple disparate systems. Important to note, with IoT, there is a blending of OT and IT, and IT professionals are now increasingly being required to understand and manage the capabilities of OT."

Helix Device Cloud provides the infrastructure for getting data from the embedded asset level and enables API management at the cloud level that can allow movement of data to independent enterprise systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) software, he added. For its part, Predixion also integrates with platforms by Accenture and PLAT.ONE.

"We offer our own cloud service.  In addition to running or solution in a private cloud, customers may use the validated solution on Microsoft Azure or Amazon AWS," Stover added. "We can embed the MLSM technology into any .NET or Java based application.  We have solutions that can run inside of databases and in Hadoop, as well as embedding into a variety of other application environments."
