VMware Buys Cloud Manager, Partners With AWS

VMware said it will acquire CloudHealth Technologies, a provider of tools for managing cloud costs and resources.

Separately, VMware announced during a company event this week in Las Vegas it will collaborate with Amazon Web Services on a relational database service.

VMware said Monday (Aug. 27) the CloudHealth acquisition would help expand its efforts to boost management and performance of distributed applications hosted on multiple clouds. The platform runs on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

The acquisition expands VMware’s cloud services to include the ability to provide consistent operations across multiple clouds, Shekar Ayyar, VMware’s executive vice president for strategy and corporate development, explained in a blog post announcing the deal.

VMware (NYSE: VMW) expects the acquisition of CloudHealth to close during the third quarter. Other details of the purchase were not disclosed.

CloudHealth’s current customers include Dow Jones, Pinterest and Yelp (NYSE: YELP). The Boston-based cloud manager was founded in 2012.

Meanwhile, the partnership with AWS (NASDAQ: AMZN) will allow users of the cloud giant’s relational database service to run it in VMware-based software-defined datacenters or on hybrid infrastructure. The service is designed to automate database management regardless of where the database is deployed.

The relational database service will support MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL databases. The service will be available in the “coming months,” VMware said.
