Wind River Supports Intel Industrial SoCs Designed for Real-Time and AI-Driven Intelligent Systems
ALAMEDA, Calif., Oct. 26, 2021 -- Wind River, a global leader in delivering software for intelligent systems, today announced support for Intel Atom x6000 Series and Intel Pentium and Celeron N and J Series processors and 11th Gen Intel Core processors and Intel Celeron processors. This development is part of a multi-year effort to optimize Wind River software for Intel industrial system-on-a-chip offerings (SoCs).
The industry-leading VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS), a part of Wind River Studio, is the most widely deployed commercial RTOS to support the IoT-optimized Intel processors for industrial platforms that demand greater AI and real-time computing for mission-critical applications, such as functional safety and related continuous certification needs. VxWorks makes the most of the edge IP capabilities embedded in the Intel Industrial SoCs, these capabilities include Intel Time Coordinated Computing (Intel TCC), Time-Sensitive Networking, and Functional Safety.
“We are moving towards a more automated intelligent systems world, with IoT devices generating vast amounts of data at the edge. The right software is needed to securely capture and process real-time machine data with digital feedback from countless intelligent edge systems,” said Avijit Sinha, Chief Product Officer, Wind River. “With Studio, we now offer an end-to-end solution spanning the needs of dynamic and compute-heavy IoT applications, from development to deployment. Working closely with Intel, Wind River is providing an RTOS made for the demanding operational needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Additionally, based on the success of this partnership, Wind River is working on supporting Tiger Lake and Ice Lake for our avionics safety-certified Wind River Helix Virtualization Platform.”
“Next generation applications, such as those for Industry 4.0, will require greater AI and real-time capabilities for critical applications for demand high-speed processing, computer vision, functional safety, and low-latency deterministic computing,” said Christine Boles, Vice President, Internet of Things Group and General Manager, Industrial Solutions Division at Intel. “Together with Wind River’s support for VxWorks and ACRN on Intel’s IoT-optimized platforms, it allows customers to quickly add new features, get new products to market, and deliver world class performance with virtualized, real time compute.”
In a major shift for industrial manufacturing companies, more AI-infused and automated decision-making computing is moving to the far edge of the cloud. Recent research shows 66% of industrial leaders believe their embedded products/solutions need to be capable of computing in near-latency-free real-time for mission critical success.1
The Intel Atom x6000 Series and Intel Pentium and Celeron N and J Series processors (Elkhart Lake) deliver value to IoT developers, architects, and engineers with a platform that’s enhanced for IoT and includes integrated resources for remote management, functional safety, TSN network synchronization, and real-time computing. The 11th Gen Intel Core processors (Tiger Lake) feature high-performance CPU/GPU compute with integrated AI acceleration, plus real-time capabilities for critical applications that demand high-speed processing, computer vision, and low-latency deterministic computing.
Regardless of industry or device type, companies building intelligent systems rely on Wind River RTOS capabilities to deliver the highest levels of security, safety, high performance, and reliability. VxWorks is a part of Wind River Studio, a cloud-native platform for the development, deployment, operations, and servicing of mission-critical intelligent systems from devices to cloud.
