Bob Metcalfe to Deliver Turing Lecture at ACM Web Conference
NEW YORK, April 25, 2023 – ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is pleased to announce that 2022 ACM A.M. Turing Award recipient Robert M. Metcalfe will give his Turing Lecture at The 2023 ACM Web Conference on Sunday, April 30 in Austin, Texas.
Metcalfe received the A.M. Turing Award for the invention, standardization, and commercialization of Ethernet. Today, Ethernet is the main conduit of wired network communications around the world, handling data rates from 10 Mbps to 400 Gbps with 800 Gbps and 1.6 Tbps technologies emerging. Ethernet has also become an enormous market, with revenue from Ethernet switches alone exceeding $30 billion in 2021, according to the International Data Corporation.
In his Turing Lecture titled “Connectivity,” Metcalfe will examine the most impactful influence on the human condition in recent history—the Internet. He also will reflect upon the history of Ethernet as well as its evolution and legacy.

About the ACM A.M. Turing Award
The A.M. Turing Award is named for Alan M. Turing, the British mathematician who articulated the mathematical foundations of computing, and who was a key contributor to the Allied cryptanalysis of the Enigma cipher during World War II. Since its inception in 1966, the Turing Award has honored the computer scientists and engineers who created the systems and underlying theoretical foundations that have propelled the information technology industry.
